This collection contains selected articles from the 2nd International Conference on Gender, Culture and Society (ICGCS) 2023 held in Padang, on 25 October 2023. This event was hosted by the Pusat Studi Gender, Anak dan Keluarga (PPGAK), The Center of Gender, Children and Family Studies Universitas Andalas.

The conference was held to facilitate discussions and share practical knowledge about gender issues in the development sector, addressing critical insights into gender dynamics and power imbalances.

The KnE Social Sciences collection contains 31 peer-review articles that investigate women’s participation in and experience of different social, political, cultural, and economic realms. These investigations reveal the critical roles women play, from managing conflict to encouraging ecotourism, and the obstacles that hinder their engagement in diverse societal spheres. Scholars of this collection highlight topics such as domestic and sexual violence, spousal loss, and rights’ violations, in addition to women’s empowerment and women in politics. In doing so, they underscore the importance of access to legal aid and welfare protections in order to effectively promote gender parity and gender inclusivity in policy frameworks, and to eliminate gender gaps in various sectors.

These articles will be of interest to academics, students, policymakers or professionals who research or work on gender studies, women’s rights, social welfare, community empowerment, and/or development studies.
