Public Health Perspective of Sustainable Development Goals: Challenges and Opportunities in the Asia-Pacific Region
The International Meeting of Public Health (IMOPH) is an international conference that was originally held as an expression of ASEAN public health students in implementing the ‘Tri Dharma’ Pillars, especially in research. The participants are expected to exchange information and add insight and maturity of scientific thinking at the forum. This international conference is also a means to establish cooperation among researchers, especially those who come from abroad. The IMOPH was first implemented on 31 October 2015 and 1 November 2015 in Indonesia with participants from five countries comprising undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, and practitioners. The 1st IMOPH resulted in a commitment by the participants to organize it every year with Indonesia being its initiator from year 1 to year 3. Therefore, “The 2nd International Meeting of Public Health 2016” was organized with the theme “Public Health Perspective of Sustainable Development Goals: The Challenges and Opportunities in Asia-Pacific Region,” and attempts have been made to expand the conference region from ASEAN to ASIA-PACIFIC.
The objectives of this meeting were to: (1) act as a forum for exchange of public health information and research that can be formulated as the solution for global public health concern; (2) be a bridge to gather ASIA-PACIFIC academicians, practitioner, and students of Public Health; (3) motivate and facilitate the student who are currently conducting research in public health; (4) provide an opportunity for publishing public health research result; (5) make a statement regarding the sustainability of IMOPH activities in Asia-Pacific region, and (6) establish an International Public Health Student Association.
This proceeding underlines the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Public Health perspective, particularly in the Asia-Pacific Region. In 2015, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) came to the end of their term, and a post-2015 agenda, comprising 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with 169 targets, took their place. The 17 goals of the SDGs integrate all three dimensions of sustainable development (economic, social, and environmental) around the themes of people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership to be completed between 2016 and 2030.
Those 17 goals also offer a broader framework to address public health concerns in a more holistic way, recognizing the evidence that we can no longer separate poor health from climate change, inadequate housing, gender disparities, and economic privation. Every one of the 17 SDGs has significant public health implications.
Public health irrefutably has a central place in SDGs since it mentions strong commitments to reduce preventable maternal and child deaths, end the epidemics of communicable and non-communicable disease, strengthen health systems capacity and achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) as well as several targets under the other goals that are also directly or indirectly linked to the health goal.
The Faculty of Public Health Universitas Indonesia as the leading public health institution in Indonesia understands the importance of public health’s role in achieving SDGs. At the very basic, the involvement of FPH UI was started by building awareness of SDGs amongst its students in forms of academic and non-academic activities.
To accelerate with SDGs’ achievement, the students need an experience where experts from all around the world share their knowledge and research as well as build a professional network and youth involvement. To address this need, FPH UI has conducted annual International Meeting on Public Health (IMOPH) since 2015, initiated by the Postgraduate Student Association. In 2017, the 3rd International Meeting of Public Health (IMOPH) was held in conjunction with the 1st Young Scholar Symposium on Public Health (YSSOPH). With the theme “Public Health as an Art and Science to Achieve SDGs,” this event was attended by nearly 200 participants who showcased their creativity, achievement, and research to contribute to SDGs acceleration. Both symposium and conference shared the same theme and topics.

The Center for Health Administration and Policy Studies, Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia (CHAMPS FPH UI), was established in 2006 with an aim to get involved in health system development in Indonesia by providing research, training, public discussion, conference, and conceptual assistance regarding health issues.
CHAMPS FPH UI has a program that focuses on hospital issues, namely Hospital Management Program (HMP). It consists of many events such as training, seminar, and conference. One of the events is an annual event, known as Hospital Administration Conference (HAC). After successfully conducting the first and second HAC, CHAMPS FKM UI brought HAC to a wider scope that targeted international speakers and participants and was named as the 1st International Conference of Hospital Administration (ICHA). Following that, in 2017, CHAMPS FKM UI organized the 2nd International Conference of Hospital Administration (ICHA) in collaboration with the Directorate of Research and Community Engagements (DRPM) and the Graduate Study of Hospital Administration, Universitas Indonesia.
Nowadays, along with technology improvement and globalization, health issues have grown to be more complicated and reach the wider area of intervention. The public is able to gain knowledge about their health through books, the Internet and other media. It drives public’s need and demand for better access, quality, and cost in healthcare. In order to survive, hospitals must compete to provide what public need.
On the other hand, this demand would require more resources to fulfil. Due to limited resources, healthcare has to be managed effectively and efficiently. To take care of this issue, healthcare should find new methods or new invention to give better access and quality of care with affordable cost. Thus, academia and professionals are challenged to make new innovations in healthcare.
Based on these issues above, the 2nd International Conference on Hospital Administration (ICHA) presented a theme, ‘Current and Future Hospital Needs: Better Insights on Innovation to Answer Hospital Administration Challenges’. The purpose of this event was to gather all of healthcare and hospital stakeholders to discuss strategies in developing the best quality of hospital services, so that we could build a broader and comprehensive understanding related to the current and future issues in hospital management from various perspective.
Participants who are involved in the International Conference of Hospital Administration (ICHA) were professionals from hospital field, academia, public health officer, and non-government organization in health. About 133 people attended the Conference on Day 1 (1st November 2017) and about 103 on Day 2 (2nd November 2017). A total of 99 papers, consisting of 37 oral presentations and 62 poster presentations, were presented in the conference.

The Sustainability and Resilience Conference is an annual conference organized by the Deanship of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research at the University of Bahrain (UOB), and under the patronage of His Excellency, Prof. Ryadh Hamzah, President of the UOB. The concept of “Sustainability and Resilience” in itself is not new worldwide, yet still new to the Middle East region in general, and to the Gulf states in particular. In 2018, the first edition of the conference is conducted in collaboration with the Northumbria University in the United Kingdom and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and is dedicated to the main theme of “Mitigating Disaster and Emergency Planning” in three vital sectors: (1) Energy and Engineering, (2) Health and Science, and (3) Cyber Security and Networks. The conference is a great opportunity for positioning Bahrain as a “Regional Hub” for sustainability and resilience and provides participants (both academics and practitioners) with gigantic opportunities for knowledge sharing and experience exchange that would eventually accumulate in setting new policies and strategies.
