Life phenomena in the context of society, education, economics, politics, or law require language to communicate. This makes the existence of Bahasa Indonesia essential in various contexts. Besides, language becomes a tool of thought in solving national problems as the role of language—both verbally and non-verbally—can inevitably diminish the problems when it plays in polite and respectful ways. Language, literature art, and culture have a vital position in the field of education. Possessing a good understanding of these aspects will lead students to have exemplary and strong character and be independent and responsible so that they can compete with the current world’s challenges. For this reason, language, literature, arts, and culture and their instructions play great roles in enhancing the quality of human resources to realize Indonesia’s Golden Generation. Accordingly, thoughts on intensifying the functions of Bahasa Indonesia into international language has begun to rapidly emerge since Law No. 24 of the Year 2009, Chapter III, on National Language and the fourth section of Article 44 on Intensifying the Function of Bahasa Indonesia to be International Language established, which states the following:

1. Government intensifies the function of Bahasa Indonesia into an international language, gradually, systematically, and continuously.
2. Linguistic bodies coordinate improvement on the function of Bahasa Indonesia into an international language as stated in verse (1).
3. Further provisions on the improvement of the function of Bahasa Indonesia into an international language as referred to verse (1) shall be regulated in a Government Regulation.

In the light of the background, the Association of Indonesian Language and Literature Study Program (IKAPROBSI) conducted the International Seminar on Language, Literature, and Education (ISLLE). The ISLLE was conducted to promote and radiate the prestige of Bahasa Indonesia to the international society. The effort to make Bahasa Indonesia reputable and enhance its function so it can be considered as an international language candidate is expected to be made through this program.

Modernity Junctures: Avant-garde as a Cultural and Anthropological Project

2017 is marked by the centenary of the October Revolution, a historical event whose consequences reverberated across the globe through the twentieth century. Radical political upheaval was preceded by tectonic shifts in all spheres of culture, by symbolic revolutions in art, language, ways of thinking, and everyday practices. The advances and conflicts of modernity were expressed in the most visible forms in the anthropological and cultural project of the Avant-garde movement. In Russia, there exists an established tradition of approaching Avant-garde primarily within the art history. However, today we can see how interdisciplinary approaches to complex phenomena of culture such as avant-garde movement that combine methods of social sciences and humanities evolve in anthropology, cultural studies, history, and philosophy. Avant-garde projects comprise, on the one hand, intellectual utopias and artistic manifestos and, on the other, practical realization of these ideas in works of art, buildings, and everyday practices. Soviet Constructivism, which is inseparable from the global wave of modernization in the 1920s and entwined with Socialist modernity, remains of vital importance for understanding the Avant-garde history. Constructivism was a philosophical and cultural project of recasting the human life through integrating contemporary cultural resources and modern industrial production. It sought to turn culture and art, in particular, into an experimental laboratory for designing new forms of social organization and practices, which would then transform the fabric of the whole society. Soviet Constructivism found its expression in the art (theater and cinema, photography and painting, music and dance, literature and poetry) as well as in many aspects of the everyday life (architecture and design). Ekaterinburg offers some of the most intriguing sites of Soviet Constructivism, where revolutionary ideas were realized in architectural complexes and districts that survive until today.

Religion in the Public Sphere: Paradoxical Presence

In modern social sciences, the public sphere is understood as a complex of institutions and practices that serves as an intermediary between society and individual actors. It is in the public sphere that common opinion is formed, which legitimizes or questions the legitimacy of a state’s actions. Secularity is a systemic feature of the public sphere because the public sphere emerges from individuals’ communication without any transcendental principle. The efficiency of the public deliberation hinges on the fact that it is conducted within the rules of rational discourse. Yet, in the modern world, religious speakers are more and more vocal in the public debate and claim an equal right to be heard in discussions on vital political and social issues. Moreover, religious identities become decisive motives for individuals acting in their official and institutional positions. This situation brings forth a problem – both theoretical and practical – of forms and methods of coordinating the relation between rational public discourse and subjective religious preferences.

The International Research Conference on Higher Education 2017 (IRCHE 2017) was a four-day, biennial activity initiated after the successful research conferences organized by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in 2011, 2013 and 2015. The event was attended by more than 400 academicians, researchers and innovators, policymakers and research enthusiasts from 128 higher education institution, public and private research organizations, industries representatives across 24 countries in Asia-Pacific region. The 1st International Conference on South East Asia Studies, ICSEAS 2016, was hosted by Badan Penerbit dan Publikasi Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This conference intended to bring out the challenges which come from the decrease of absolute poverty and the problems it poses to an open forum in a way researchers could exchange their ideas freely in order to fundamentally help put the challenge of the twentieth century for the region in a clear perspective. ICSEAS 2016 invited 23 international speakers from Australia, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom that highlighted the recent developments in the specific area through speech, parallel and plenary sessions. ICSEAS 2016 also invited 19 researchers from related fields to referee ICSEAS 2016’s manuscripts.  After a careful refereeing process, the Scientific & Editorial Board have selected 36 manuscripts from over 150 registered presenters. These selected manuscripts reflect the seven themes of ICSEAS 2016, including pluralism in a democratic Southeast Asia, challenges to democracy, welfare and poverty in an unequal society, equality and new categories of discrimination, climate change and its challenges, food security and the future of Southeast Asia, and challenges to border security. Editing process in this proceedings involves experts and professional editors from five countries (Indonesia, Latvia, Singapore, Sweden, and Thailand).

One of the international, regional and national AML/CFT systems’ priorities in terms of prospects for the introduction of new financial technology (FinTech) is the creation of a platform for constructive dialogue and support of innovation in financial services, and finding solutions for their regulation and control. FinTech innovations can improve financial inclusion of customers, entities, and communities.  The financial services paradigm can be reorganized around new platforms, infrastructures, and relations with service providers. The prospect of the international AML/CFT community’s efforts is to understand how these changes will affect the landscape of financial services, the stability of the financial system, and the opportunities to identify, eliminate or reduce risks and threats. In the modern world, financial threats and risks have become quite systemic things. Therefore, they can be dealt with only by systemic methods. Scientific and educational organizations play an important role in this fight. Joint efforts of financial monitoring bodies, the academic community, and network AML/CFT Institute will contribute to strengthening and development of the system of international and regional financial security.
