The University of Beira Interior hosted the RICON19 International Conference, Laboratory Workshop and Brokerage Event between the 11th and 13th of December 2019. This was the second REMINE conference and was supported by the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020, along with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) research fellowship programme and the Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) programme. The event provided an international forum for scholars to debate new research findings and discuss their latest achievements in the fields of industrial waste material valorization and the recycling of mining and industrial wastes. The research produced and presented in these papers is of particular significance to engineers, academics and industry specialists, demonstrating the potential of mining and industrial wastes as raw materials for cementitious binders, useful in civil engineering projects, building products, and ceramics. The conference was preceded by a Lab Workshop on alkali-activation and accelerated carbonation technologies to demonstrate the feasibility to obtain building materials (mortar and concrete) by reusing mining and industrial wastes by alkali-activation and CO2. This workshop also promoted the use and mineralization of CO2, contributing to the prevention and limitation of global warming.

System engineering is a special area of engineering that focuses on large interdisciplinary projects and ensures the success of complex systems throughout their life cycle (from conception to decommissioning). The IIIrd Annual International Conference on "System Engineering" was dedicated to the problems of implementing system engineering in the industry and preparing engineers who possess the competence of it. A system engineer's role requires them to ensure: (1) meeting the real needs of the parties interested in the system by using advanced technologies both in the system itself and in the processes of its development, production, maintenance, modernization and replacement (decommissioning); (2) completion and coordination of the documentation and implementation of the target system throughout its life cycle between all users, customer representatives, investors, and other stakeholders; (3) cohesion, organization, and effective work with the project team. Teaching globally competitive system engineers requires creating a modern educational environment as a place for collaboration, coworking and communication, and implementing the TLD (Thinking Learning Doing) educational concept on this basis, according to which the learning process is most effectively implemented in the process of solving non-standard tasks that require maximum mental effort. The world's resources are fully used for education, both in the mode of open platforms and academic mobility. The conference discusses not only the use of system engineering approaches in solving specific tasks of enterprises but also the issues of training engineers who possess system engineering competencies and developing their "Soft and Self Skills," including critical thinking, problem-solving, creative thinking, ability to learn independently, effective communication, and teamwork. The main goal of the conference was to consolidate efforts in the field of education, business, and government to create human resources that can ensure the competitiveness of enterprises in the conditions of digital transformation.
Conference topics: Methodologies and tools of System Engineering; successful practices of System Engineering; and modeling and digital twins.
