Sustainability and Resilience Conference: Mitigating Risks and Emergency Planning – Engineering Track
The Sustainability and Resilience Conference is an annual conference organized by the Deanship of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research at the University of Bahrain (UOB), and under the patronage of His Excellency, Prof. Ryadh Hamzah, President of the UOB. The concept of “Sustainability and Resilience” in itself is not new worldwide, yet still new to the Middle East region in general, and to the Gulf states in particular. In 2018, the first edition of the conference is conducted in collaboration with the Northumbria University in the United Kingdom and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and is dedicated to the main theme of “Mitigating Disaster and Emergency Planning” in three vital sectors: (1) Energy and Engineering, (2) Health and Science, and (3) Cyber Security and Networks. The conference is a great opportunity for positioning Bahrain as a “Regional Hub” for sustainability and resilience and provides participants (both academics and practitioners) with gigantic opportunities for knowledge sharing and experience exchange that would eventually accumulate in setting new policies and strategies.

REMINE International Conference on Valorization of Mining and Industrial Wastes into Construction Materials By Alkali-activation
The University of Beira Interior hosted the RICON19 International Conference, Laboratory Workshop and Brokerage Event between the 11th and 13th of December 2019. This was the second REMINE conference and was supported by the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020, along with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) research fellowship programme and the Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) programme. The event provided an international forum for scholars to debate new research findings and discuss their latest achievements in the fields of industrial waste material valorization and the recycling of mining and industrial wastes. The research produced and presented in these papers is of particular significance to engineers, academics and industry specialists, demonstrating the potential of mining and industrial wastes as raw materials for cementitious binders, useful in civil engineering projects, building products, and ceramics. The conference was preceded by a Lab Workshop on alkali-activation and accelerated carbonation technologies to demonstrate the feasibility to obtain building materials (mortar and concrete) by reusing mining and industrial wastes by alkali-activation and CO2. This workshop also promoted the use and mineralization of CO2, contributing to the prevention and limitation of global warming.
